Thing 8 for 23 Things is about Facebook. Facebook is something that I have used for over a decade. It is one online platform that I use strictly for personal use, unlike Twitter and Instagram where I share publicly my research and work. Due to this, I’ve made my privacy settings quite stringent and do not accept friends that I do not personally know.

Pages

That being said, I do have a page on Facebook for my business (Out of the Woods). However,  I don’t engage with this page too much, as I’m not actively trying to build my business at the moment. I do find that it is a great way to share reviews from clients and provides them with a familiar platform to submit reviews.

Groups

Facebook Groups is something I recently started using to build a community of fellow graduate students. The group is called Read, Write, Share. Within the group we host work sessions where we work for 2 hours together. Checking in every half hour to say how things are going. We can also request feedback on whatever we are working on. People within the group share interesting or relevant information and opportunities as well. It’s not a large group, but it has provided accountability. Again, Facebook is a platform that many people use and are comfortable with, so it works well.

Your Facebook group sounds fab. I’ve been a distance student and something like this would have been brilliant.

Thank you! It’s something so simple to start but has such a big impact on motivation to work!
